A great big HELLO to our Southwest parents. It has been too long since we have been together, and we will have to wait until we know it is safe to return to our normal community interactions.
We are very cognizant of all our troubles caused by this pandemic. We are also very aware of the dangers the virus presents. We are also eager to get back to the business of learning and teaching. Our goal, as always at SW, is to be safe physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

As you may know our RSD schools are returning to the work of learning and teaching virtually until it is safe to do so in person. I am here to inform you that we have spent the summer learning how to do distance learning much more effectively. You will see big differences in our learning this Fall compared to last Spring.
At SW we know that relationships are the key to successful learning and teaching. So as we re-open our school, we will focus on two ideas: building relationships and ensuring everyone is safe (physically and emotionally).

At SW we will do this in two ways. The first is our "Back to School Night". We will have meetings individually or in small groups with your new teacher to make connections with your child, learn about the new grade expectations, and teach you and your child how to use your computer. We know by beginning to make a strong relationship and knowing how to use technology, our learning and teaching will be more successful.

Our second way will be built into each and every "virtual day” and we have been practicing these at SW for years. Community Circle is a pillar of practice at our school and will continue to be virtually. We will learn how to “be present”, use our "voice", and share ideas and experiences in order to create our community of learners.

Our teachers and parapros will be calling your to set up a meeting with your new teacher. The meeting will be for 20-30 minutes on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. During this meeting you will:
    - Get to know your teacher and the teacher you and your child.
    - Be introduced to the grade level standards and teacher expectations.
    - Learn how to use your child’s IPAD
    - Obtain workbooks, materials and guides
    - Schedules for learning.
    - Fill out and sign appropriate documents

In order to ensure we are all safe, when you come on campus we are requiring:
    1. Only the child and the parent attending the meeting should enter the classroom. No additional individuals are allowed in the classroom.
    2. Everyone will wear a mask at all times while on campus.
    3. Practice social distancing, stay 6 feet away from others while in the hallways or waiting outside of a classroom.
    4. See only teachers you have scheduled an appointment with.
    5. Use our hand dispensers to frequently wash your hands.
    6. Please bring a strong bag or backpack to take home the learning materials you will receive.

We know you have many choices of schools to attend. We are confident that Southwest School is the best place for your child. We have been here for over 30 years and we are committed to a quality education for ALL children. Southwest is a safe, caring and innovative school for your child.

We look forward to seeing you this week.

    - Juan Sierra, Principal

Juan Sierra, director

Welcome to Southwest Elementary School

  • Return to School Update

The safety, health and well-being of our students, staff and community continues to remain our highest priority at the Roosevelt School District. As a result of a thorough review of the Maricopa County COVID-19 health data for our South Phoenix community -- we have made the decision to remain in a virtual learning setting at least until Winter Break. The most recent community level COVID data shows that there has been an increase in the positivity rates within some of our community’s zip codes over the past two weeks. Based on the Maricopa County Health recommendations, this increase in positivity rate is supportive of only virtual learning. Although our school district covers three zip codes and the data varies between the zip codes, we continue to make decisions based on the district as a whole. Therefore, the district believes that it is in the best and safest interest of all our students, staff and community to remain in a virtual learning setting. Our team will continue to prepare to offer an in-person learning setting option in January.  For additional details and information please visit our return to school page.
