Chavez Renaming Exploratory Committee Meeting Minutes

Date: June 4, 2026
Time: 9:00 a.m.
Location: Zoom Meeting

1. Call to Order

2. Roll Call

Members present included:

  • Pamela Neal

  • Shannon Connors

  • Sandy Velasquez

  • Herlinda Calderon

  • Lorena Rojas

  • Arturo Trujillo (Facilitator)

3. Recap of Previous Meeting

Mr. Trujillo provided a summary of the previous committee meeting. The committee had reviewed community survey results and voted to reopen the survey to gather additional community feedback. The committee also previously recommended that, should the school name change, the name "Cesar Chavez" remain in place until the completion of the school rebuild, at which time the name could be revisited.

4. Survey Results Presentation

Mr. Trujillo presented the results of the extended community survey. A total of 526 responses were received.

Survey Demographics:

  • Students: 3%

  • Current Staff: 14%

  • Alumni: 9%

  • Parents: 21%

  • Former Staff: 12%

  • Community Members: 49%

Name Preference Results:

  1. Rio Vista Community School – 218 votes (41.44%)

  2. Cesar Chavez Community School (with rebuild stipulation) – 128 votes (24.33%)

  3. Corazón Community School – 125 votes (23.76%)

  4. Excellence Community School – 55 votes (10.46%)

5. Committee Discussion

Committee members discussed the survey results and the appropriate recommendation to forward to the Governing Board.

Discussion points included:

  • Members acknowledged that the survey results reflected strong community participation and provided a broader representation of stakeholders.

  • Several members noted that the vote totals for Cesar Chavez Community School and Corazón Community School were very close.

  • Members discussed maintaining the Cesar Chavez name until completion of the school rebuild due to:

    • Potential costs associated with an immediate name change.

    • The district's ongoing work to determine the future signature school model for the campus.

Committee members also discussed the role of the Governing Board, recognizing that the Board would consider the committee's recommendations but would ultimately make the final decision.

6. Public Comments from Committee Members

Committee member Herlinda Calderon shared concerns regarding the circumstances surrounding the proposed name change and expressed support for retaining the Cesar Chavez name. She emphasized the importance of considering community perspectives and allowing the Governing Board access to all survey comments when making its decision.

7. Committee Recommendation

After discussion, the committee reached consensus to recommend the following three names to the Governing Board, in order of survey preference:

  1. Rio Vista Community School

  2. Cesar Chavez Community School (with the recommendation that the current name remain until the school rebuild is completed)

  3. Corazón Community School

The committee requested that the rationale for maintaining the Cesar Chavez name until the rebuild, including cost considerations and future signature school planning, be included in the presentation to the Governing Board.

8. Next Steps

Mr. Trujillo informed the committee that:

  • The survey results and committee recommendations would be presented to the Governing Board during a public Study Session.

  • The Board would review the data, survey comments, and committee recommendations.

  • Final Board action was anticipated at a subsequent Governing Board meeting in July.

9. Adjournment

Mr. Trujillo thanked committee members for their participation and service throughout the process. The meeting was adjourned at 9:25 a.m.
