    Roosevelt celebrates Native American Heritage Month

    Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each November and is inclusive of the many different tribes and cultures in the Americas. Roosevelt School District proudly honors and recognizes the contributions and influence of Native Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

    Kindergarten PE classes receive bike donations

    Kindergarten students at Irene Lopez, Maxine O. Bush and Sunland schools will have a new component to their PE classes thanks to a balance bike donation from All Kids Bike and the HDR Foundation. Each school received 24 student bikes and helmets as well as a bike for each teacher on Nov. 10.

    Students, principal raise funds through fun

    Principal Roat was duct taped to a pole on Wednesday, Nov. 2 as part of a fundraiser during Conchos school’s monthly gathering. Students were raising the money for the middle school Catalina Island trip later this school year.

    Davis hosts royalty, dancers from two tribes

    On Nov. 11, John R. Davis welcomed royalty from the Gila and Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Communities as well as A’al Indigenous Traditional Pima Basket Dancers to share with students some of the culture of the local indigenous tribes.

    C.O. Greenfield families gathered on campus for a Thanksgiving lunch on Nov. 18. The event, organized and facilitated by the Student Council, saw 35 parents come and have lunch with their students.

    Students at the Amy Houston Academy gave campaign kickoff speeches on Monday, Oct. 31. The candidates each prepared a video or presentation to support their case for why they should represent their peers in student government.

    Students in the Teen Court program at Percy L. Julian School, had a chance to meet Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Phoenix City Manager, Mr. Jeff Barton, members of the Phoenix City Council, staff from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and other dignitaries to Celebrate the Street Sign Dedication for the late Bishop Alexis A. Thomas on Nov. 3.

    On Nov. 22, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School hosted its second annual Monarchs in Motion Fun Run in partnership with Aravaipa Running. The South Phoenix community partner supports students in experiencing the joy and pride that comes with participating in and finishing a professional race!

    Scorpions, Cardinals team up for STEM event

    On Nov. 8, students from the Sunland STEAM Academy took a field trip to the Arizona Science Center in partnership with the Arizona Cardinals. The trip featured a Girls in STEM Workshop, dive experiment demonstration, a Science Center Tour and lunch. During the visit, the Arizona Cardinals presented a donation to the Arizona Science Center to increase their Girls in STEM scholarships specifically earmarked for girls in under-served communities.

    Eighth grade students at Valley View taught about the Earth’s rotation by making sun dials with their kindergarten through sixth grade peers. This continues their efforts to develop leaders by having the older students do and model for the younger ones.
