The Roosevelt School District offers its sincere thanks and appreciation to Shenell Alexander and Megan Gestson for stepping up and serving as co-interim superintendents over these last months. They worked in lock-step to ensure as little disruption as possible and did a wonderful job! And that is why they were selected to receive the Values in Action Awards this month for Collaboration.

STEM in Roosevelt gets boost from Deloitte, Amazon
This is more than a robot! Donated by Deloitte and Amazon Web Services, Greenfield students in the Roosevelt School District will have fun while building and learning coding, programming, and robotics with this “Smart Rover.” We are pleased to advance the impact of The Smart Factory on STEM education for tomorrow’s talent. Thank you Board Member Robinson for connecting us with this opportunity.

Black History Mural Project
Our Board President Ms. Shelley Jackson spoke at the kickoff for the Black History Mural Project. She was joined by Governer Katie Hobbs and Cheryl Boone Isaacs – the Director of the Sindey Portier New American Film School and the first African American President of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.

Roosevelt Schools Celebrate MLK Day
On Friday, Jan. 13, about one hundred volunteers came to C.J. Jorgensen, Martin Luther King Jr. and Percy L Julian school to complete MLK-themed class projects and engage in discussion of the impact of his life on our world through arts, reading, gardening and speaking engagements and during assemblies.

Congratulations to Ms. Joanna Gipson, Instructional Coach at Campbell School, and Ms. Cassandra Carter, District Math Specialist, for earning their national board certified teacher certifications! This career milestone is no small feat and we are proud of both these individuals!

Our team worked diligently throughout January to continue making Roosevelt schools a safe and nurturing place to learn. Sites are continuing their progress toward completed wellness rooms and use of materials to support healthy mindfulness.

Human Resources Team Shines at Job Fair
On Feb. 4, our HR team, along with other RSD leaders took part in the Arizona Education Job Fair and Career Expo in Glendale. They made great connections with other districts and interviewed several candidates that will make great new hires.

K-5 Curriculum Adoption Committees
Staff committees selected two science and two social studies curriculums to advance to the pilot stage. Throughout the 60 day pilot we will be gathering student and teacher data and input. Consumables and materials are on display at each school site and the district office.

Greenfield student is top speller in R-S-D
The Roosevelt School District would like to congratulate our spelling bee winner Jayden German Galviz, who is a 6th grader at Greenfield. He went on to represent our district at the Regional Spelling Bee, along with our second-place winner Ayoub Harun 7th grader from Southwest and third place winner Zaiden Austin 5th grader from Sunland. Thank you for representing RSD!

Valley View Wins Cheer Championship
On Saturday, Jan. 21, Roosevelt hosted a district cheer competition at South Mountain High School. Congratulations to the Valley View cheer squad as they won two of three categories and the overall score to secure the 2023 district championship!

Eagle student success recognized
Another celebration from Valley View School, the Eagle Band was selected to participate in the Greater Phoenix Honor Band hosted by the Phoenix Union High School District. We are so proud of their hard work and accomplishments.

Roosevelt students have interactive STEM experience
Students from T.G. Barr, C.O. Greenfield and Sunland schools heard opening remarks from Larry Fitzgerald and met with more than 20 organizations to experience science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics fields and sports.

Scorpions scope out art museum
Sunland seventh and eight grade students were able to visit the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art thanks to Kelvin Beachum Jr. This was such a great experience for our STEAM Academy students and we truly appreciate Mr. Beachum’s generosity!

Tigers haul in winter harvest
First grade students at V.H. Lassen have seen their vegetables go from farm to table as they harvested their winter greens! The Swiss Chard crop will go home to families to promote healthy eating habits! Tower gardens were harvested inside the classroom as well, demonstrating another way to grow fresh produce using light and water from an inside setting.

Colts continue on-campus growth
John F. Kennedy students celebrated their growth with a growth parade. Students held up signs that displayed their “goals met” over the past 3 months and were cheered on by staff and other students while they paraded around campus.

Panthers PBL on full display at expo
Southwest School hosted its Bi-annual Exposition of Learning right before Winter Break. Hundreds of parents came to campus experiencing the Panther VISION, Reading the world, Understanding our world, and Acting to improve our world.
