Roosevelt School District No. 66 welcomed students, families and employees back for the 2026–2027 school year with a series of events focused on preparation, professional learning, community connection and celebration.
During the September 1 Governing Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Dani Portillo shared highlights from New Teacher Orientation, Summer Institute, Meet the Teacher Night, Staff Convocation and the district’s annual Backpack Giveaway.
Welcoming Roosevelt’s Newest Educators
New Teacher Orientation gave educators joining Roosevelt an opportunity to learn about the district, connect with colleagues and prepare for their first year in the Roosevelt community.
Experienced Roosevelt educators shared knowledge and advice with the district’s newest teachers, helping them become familiar with the support, resources and relationships available throughout the district.
Learning and Growing Together
Roosevelt employees continued preparing for the new school year during Summer Institute.
Through collaborative sessions and hands-on professional learning, educators strengthened their skills, exchanged ideas and developed strategies to support students. The institute demonstrated Roosevelt’s continued investment in employee development and high-quality instruction.
Connecting With Families
Meet the Teacher Night welcomed students and families to Roosevelt schools before the first day of classes.
Families met teachers and school staff, visited classrooms, learned about campus programs and received information for the new school year. The event also marked an important milestone for the new Maxine O. Bush Future Ready Academy as it welcomed its inaugural students and families.
These early connections help build the strong partnerships between families and educators that students need to succeed.
Celebrating Roosevelt Employees
Staff Convocation brought employees from across the district together for an energetic celebration ahead of the new school year.
The program included student performances, school spirit and recognition of employees who demonstrate Roosevelt’s core values. Staff members celebrated their collective work and renewed their commitment to serving the students and families of South Phoenix.
The excitement, teamwork and sense of community displayed throughout Convocation helped set the tone for a positive and successful school year.
Supporting Students and Families
Roosevelt also hosted a community Backpack Giveaway to help students begin the year ready to learn.
Students received backpacks and school supplies, participated in family-friendly activities and had access to additional services, including complimentary haircuts. The event brought together families, employees, volunteers and community partners in support of Roosevelt students.
From preparing educators to welcoming families and providing essential resources, Roosevelt’s start-of-year events reflected the district’s continued commitment to ensuring every student feels supported, connected and ready for success.
