Roosevelt School District continues moving forward with its Reinventing Roosevelt initiative, focusing on student success, school improvements, and creating stronger learning environments across South Phoenix. During the October 27, 2026, Governing Board meeting, district leaders shared updates on student attendance and the ongoing transformation of Sunland STEAM Academy. One highlight was the district's Attendance Week, held September 14–18, which achieved a districtwide attendance rate of 93.6%, with Thursday reaching an impressive 95%. Ignacio Conchos School earned first place with 94.2% attendance, followed by John F. Kennedy Academy of Inquiry at 94% and Bernard Black Entrepreneurial Academy at 93.8%. The district also recognized the efforts of teachers and school communities who continue encouraging students to show up, stay engaged, and make every school day count.
A major focus of the presentation was the exciting progress of Phase II of Sunland STEAM Academy's campus transformation. The project includes plans for a new gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen, stage, and additional instructional and support spaces designed to enhance the student experience. Throughout the planning process, Sunland teachers, administrators, and staff have played an important role in shaping the design, providing feedback on spaces for athletics, music, drama, dance, and daily school operations. Working alongside RSD Construction, Facilities, and Grace Design Studios, the school community is helping ensure that the new facilities support both academic instruction and extracurricular opportunities while minimizing disruptions during construction.
The Sunland Phase II project is moving forward with a tentative construction schedule beginning in October 2026. Phase 2A, which includes the gymnasium, kitchen, and lobby, is scheduled for completion in July 2027, followed by Phase 2B, featuring the cafeteria, stage, and classrooms, with completion anticipated in December 2027. The project is expected to be fully occupied by January 2028. These improvements represent Roosevelt School District's continued investment in modern, welcoming spaces where students can learn, grow, and thrive. Through stronger attendance, collaboration with educators, and thoughtful campus improvements, Roosevelt School District is building a brighter future for its students and continuing to be the Genesis of Change.
