Bush Future Ready Academy Progress Update

At the November regular meeting, the Roosevelt Governing Board heard an update on the reopening of Maxine O. Bush School.

The school, which was one of five closed at the end of the 2024-25 school year, is on track to reopen in time for the 2026-27 school year as a brand-new center of learning.

The campus renovation plan is being finalized amid an ongoing budgeting and facilities review, which will ensure the school meets the needs of future changemakers.

Curriculum and other academic program development are being crafted to be supported by a staffing model that would include a partnership with Arizona State University.

Feedback from several surveys and a community listening tour is being incorporated to ensure the Future Ready Academy's launch is a success.

  • Survey Findings: Core innovation drivers identified and Portrait of a Bush Academy Learner identified based on educational philosophy, community history, state educational shifts, and survey results.

  • Desired Shifts: smaller class sizes and individualized support, stronger expectations and academic rigor, prioritize hands-on project-based learning opportunities, mastery of skills desired, broaden the definition of student success beyond academics (100 participants)

  • Student Perspective: voice and choice in learning is limited, problem-solving culture consistency is needed, they want safety, belonging, and caring relationships, opportunities for creativity, leadership, and problem-solving with engaging/relevant learning experiences (140 participants)

  • Core Learning: designed based on the science of learning, the educational LEAPS needed to attain excellence, survey results/discussions, design studios with the RSD team, and community partners. Those experiences include: PBL Showcases tied to the South Mountain community assets, future-ready/career-connected learning, advisory systems/school family circles, and identity celebration.
