Reinventing RSD: Board Update | Oct. 2025

During the October Governing Board Meeting, several project updates were delivered to the board relating to the Reinventing Roosevelt efforts.

Facilities

Construction and Upgrades

Sunland Rebuild

At Sunland, the Chasse/Rytan Team is adding the final touches to the campus, including the new playground, sports field, safety handrails, and drinking fountains as well as ironing out the punch walk items.

Remodels

Across the district, Roosevelt prioritized safety by replacing outdated and problematic rolling gates. These heavy, unbalanced gates posed serious safety risks and required constant maintenance. Secure, reliable swing gates at every campus and district building are currently being installed.

At Bernard Black, eight aging student restrooms were remodeled. The transformation incorporated school colors into the tile, partitions, and epoxy flooring. Four restrooms at Colves Campell school were also remodeled.

Ignacio Conchos and P.L. Julian schools had new full laminate flooring and safer rubberized gym flooring installed.

Systems Repairs

HVAC

The Roosevelt Facilities team has been assessing the districts, more than 1000, HVAC units and addressing issues along with planning a better more efficient preventative maintenance plan to provide longer service from each and every unit.

Bond 2024

School Rebuilds

Irene Lopez and Cesar E. Chavez schools are slated to be rebuilt using the 2024 voter approved bond. An Architect is expected to be chosen by the December board meeting and a General contractor will be selected in early 2026.

Maxine O. Bush Project

The reopening of Maxine O. Bush school is being pursued aggressively, with major updates to the phyiscal building being sought, including: open learning studios, makers spaces and collaborative professional development areas.

Repurposed Buildings

The district is exploring the potential lease or sale of six district-owned properties. Legal research is essential to:

  • Ensure compliance with state and federal education property laws

  • Understand zoning restrictions, land use, and title status

  • Evaluate potential liability and required disclosures

  • Establish terms that protect the district’s long-term interests

  • Comply with public notice and bidding requirements
