Dear Lopez Parents and Guardians, We want to inform you about an incident brought to our attention earlier today. Several students alerted school administration to a concerning Instagram post that included an image of a gun and a vague statement about bringing it to school. While Irene Lopez School was not specifically named in the post, we take matters like this very seriously. The post has been reported to local law enforcement, who are actively investigating the situation. Please know that the safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. We are working closely with Phoenix Police Department and have implemented all appropriate safety measures. In addition, students who make or post threats will be disciplined according to district policy, which could include long-term suspension or reassignment to our alternative education program. This situation serves as an important reminder about the role social media plays in our students' lives and the importance of monitoring their online activity. We encourage all parents to: Regularly review your child’s social media accounts to ensure they are using these platforms responsibly. Have open conversations with your child about the importance of reporting concerning posts, whether they see them or hear about them from friends. Remind your child that any threats or inappropriate posts, even if made as a joke, can have serious consequences. Immediately report any concerning messages or posts to school administration or law enforcement. We are proud of the students who stepped forward to alert us to this post. Their quick action demonstrates the importance of working together as a community to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our school office. Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring the safety of all students.

Hello Irene Lopez School Community, Over the past two weeks, school districts throughout the city, state, and country have been receiving social media threats. We are hearing more about these districts pressing charges and prosecuting the individuals responsible for these threats as felony crimes. There has also been an increase in the prosecution of parents who either turn a blind eye or enable their children to carry out such threats and other harmful actions. At Roosevelt School District, we care deeply about our students and staff, and their safety is always our priority. However, creating and sharing social media threats causes fear, disrupts the educational process, and leads to unnecessary student absences. These actions also have a lasting impact on our community. We will continue to report all perceived threats to the authorities and take appropriate actions, including keeping our families and staff informed. It is important to note that we have not received any credible threats to RSD schools at this time. However, there have been instances of students posting inappropriate content on social media, and the authorities have been contacted to investigate. We urge parents to take a moment tonight to speak with their children about the seriousness of this issue. Please emphasize that creating or sharing threats, even in jest, can have severe consequences and potentially harm their future. Law enforcement will be involved, and the district will take disciplinary action, up to and including recommending expulsion. If you have any information or tips about individuals involved in making or distributing social media threats, please use our safety reporting form on our website or contact our tip line at Police Department’s Non-Emergency line at (602) 262-6151. Thank you for partnering with us to support the safety and well-being of our Irene Lopez school community along with Roosevelt School District students and staff. Ms. Elizabeth Romo School Principal

September 9, 2024 Dear Parents, Staff and Community Members, The safety and security of students is the highest priority at Irene Lopez and Roosevelt School District. For this reason, we wanted to communicate that it was reported that a student had a weapon in a backpack. Upon investigation we found a toy gun in the student’s backpack that a younger sibling had placed there. We are thankful that students reported the suspicious activity to trusted adults. We were able to locate the student and address the matter promptly. Timely reporting supports safety throughout our community. This is a good time to remind your children about school safety. Here are some important tips you may speak with your children about: • Ask your student to alert a trusted adult about any suspicious activity immediately. • Remind student that toys resembling weapons are not allowed at school and make others feel unsafe. • Reassure your student that our schools are safe; teachers and administrators work to ensure safety on campus. Thanks for partnering with us to ensure safety is a priority at Irene Lopez.

Dear Roosevelt School District Parent(s)/Guardian(s), The safety of our students and staff is always our priority. We want to inform you that we have been made aware of messages that are circulating nationally among students through text message and social media that is threatening in nature. Similar messages and social media posts have recently been reported in districts across the country. We are aware of a few of our students who reported receiving messages. However, there have been no confirmed threats against any of our schools. We take all reports and concerns very seriously. We are in communication with Phoenix Police regarding this matter and they indicated that there is no imminent threat towards any of our schools. We are sharing this information with you in case your child hears about this or receives the message. We want to remind everyone that we take all threats seriously. We encourage parents and guardians to have open conversations with their children about the severity of making or sharing threats. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we remain fully committed to maintaining a secure and supportive environment for all. Should you or your child ever have concerns or learn of information you think is relevant to school safety, please contact your school’s front office and law enforcement. Support from our counselors and social workers is always available for students who may have concerns. Thank you for your support and understanding, Roosevelt School District
